When Kalin first stepped into Maria’s World Foundation, he didn’t know how to use kitchen utensils, had no work habits, and never imagined he could one day become a professional cook. Today, he is a key figure in the foundation’s catering service, Bon Appétit—a testament to the power of support, perseverance, and motivation.
Ivana’s story is just as inspiring. At first, she couldn’t stay in a room with more than a few people. She felt anxious and threatened. Over time, she became familiar with the space, the people, and the realization that she was safe. Today, not only does she take part in the foundation’s art workshops, but she also has a work placement at a Zara store, where she helps organize products and interacts with colleagues.
Vasil’s journey is remarkable, too. In the beginning, his parents accompanied him everywhere. Now, not only does he move around independently, but he also helps his colleagues get to the foundation’s day centers and their workplaces. He has become a mentor for those taking their first steps toward greater confidence and participation in society.
Behind these success stories stands Maria’s World Foundation—a civil society organization with a 13-year history dedicated to creating an inclusive environment where everyone has a role and a place. What started with fewer than ten people now supports 60 adults with intellectual disabilities, as well as 15 children and young people. Thanks to the foundation’s efforts, 21 individuals who were once invisible to society are now part of the workforce—more independent, confident, and active members of their communities.

Maria’s World Foundation is an official partner of Sofia Municipality in providing social services for people with intellectual disabilities. It also collaborates with dedicated employers who offer job opportunities to people facing challenges. From the Novotel hotel group and Zara to Stanimira Chocolate House, companies that hire these individuals recognize their value.
“They are the best employees—loyal, sincere, and always eager to learn,” says Stanimira Georgieva, founder of Stanimira Chocolate House.
More Than a Social Service—A Cause for the Whole Society
Maria’s World Foundation is not just about providing daily care. It educates, mentors, inspires, and creates opportunities for personal and professional fulfillment. The foundation’s programs help people with intellectual disabilities develop essential skills—from using public transportation to working in offices, kitchens, gardening, and customer service.

“A group is the best place a person can be. We are all social beings, and people with disabilities need an environment where they feel accepted and equal. Group activities are invaluable because they help build social skills, independence, and confidence,” shares the foundation’s director, Miryana Malamin-Siriyski, emphasizing how crucial it is for everyone to be part of a community and have the chance to reach their potential.
“The people who come to us need continuous support tailored to the different phases of their lives. This isn’t a service you use for three years and then move on. Some individuals achieve great independence, but most will always need some form of support—whether professional, social, or emotional,” adds Ms. Malamin-Siriyski.
Among them is Toni, who takes great pride in his work—shredding paper at the center. He is genuinely happy to contribute and takes his task seriously, knowing that his efforts matter.

Sonya is part of the Bon Appétit catering team, where she decorates sweets and helps with dishwashing. “My best skill is helping in the kitchen with catering. I do a great job, and I’m awesome at it,” she says with a big smile and confidence. She finds joy in perfecting every detail and in the sense of responsibility that comes with meaningful work.
